There is an inextricable connection in the middle of food and culture and trip abroad is a great means to recognize and palpate this relationship. On the northern coast, ceviche is quite popular. In Chiloe, a typical dish is curanto. The dish's name comes from a Mapudungan word and traditionally it was prepared in a hole dug into the ground, heated, and covered with leaves. The ingredients vary, but can comprise fish, mussels, beef, potatoes, sausage, beans or other legumes. Other cities of the south, such as Puerto Montt and Valdivia, are also famed for their seafood based dishes. Paila marina and caldillo de congrio are other examples of excellent dishes.

Chile's central valley offers specialties featuring hearty plates prepared with pork and beef. Cazuelas are stews that can be prepared with meats, along with beef, chicken, fish, etc, and vegetables such as corn, potatoes, and squash. Pastel de choclo is a casserole with a meat filling topped with a corn crust. The filling is most commonly beef or chicken, with raisins, olives, onions, and hardboiled eggs. There are also humitas, which is corn dough wrapped in a corn husk and steamed or boiled.

In Patagonia, the country's immigrant patrimony is obvious in German sweets. In Puerto Varas and Valdivia look out for chocolate shops and breweries which showcase this heritage. Also, take benefit of the opportunity to sample rare meats such as boar and ostrich in hearty preparations which do good against the southern cold.

Finally, not to be missed on a Chile vacation, are the wine and pisco. Chilean wines especially have been gaining increasing renown in up-to-date years. In particular, the valleys surrounding Santiago, along with Casablanca, San Antonio, Leyda, Aconcagua, and Maipo have gained reputations for producing excellent wine, especially white wines. The Elqui valley near La Serena is famed for its piscos. Tours of wineries and stays in bodegas can be arranged as part of a Chile vacation.
